The renovations of the High Line, begun in 2006, have turned the old railway into a magnificent public park. The last train ran on the High Line in 1980, carrying a freight of frozen turkeys. With the construction of the Interstate Highway System and the exile of manufacturing from New York, and, more generally, the United States, the High Line fell into obsolescence. Trains began to run in 1934, when the project was completed. It cost over two billion in today’s dollars to build. The elevated railway ran from Spring Street to 34th Street, snaking through buildings and across avenues. The practice was so dangerous that even with the addition of “West Side Cowboys,” men on horseback who rode in front of the trains to clear the tracks, 10th Avenue became known as “Death Avenue.” In 1929, the city decided to build the High Line as part of the larger West Side Improvement Project. In the 19th century, when Manhattan’s West Side was still a center for industry, freight trains ran on the city streets, all the way from what is now TriBeCa up to what is now Midtown. Our favorites include turning the High Line into a mile long elevated swimming pool and “Black Market Crawler, a moving structure with space for cultural, retail, and entertainment uses, both above-board and underground in nature.For the latter years of the 20th century, abandoned, decrepit and overgrown, this elevated railway on Manhattan’s West Side was the domain of pigeons, squirrels, and curious urban explorers.īut when the High Line was threatened with destruction in 1999, the preservation and renovation of this urban relic became a cause célèbre in New York, inspiring a community group, millions of dollars in donations, and finally, its transformation into a public park, completed in 2009.

Several of the entries to the Designing the High Line competition were quite interesting.The High Line is also one of NYC’s most popular places to experience outdoor art and sculpture.The design entries were displayed at Grand Central Terminal. Over 720 teams from 36 countries entered the “Designing the High Line” competition in 2003.Friends of the High Line was founded in 1999 to advocate for the High Line’s preservation and reuse as public open space. Friends of the High Line wanted the park to be sustainable, so a complex network of filters and drainage systems on multiple levels collect, store and redistribute rainwater to the plants. The soil beds on the High Line only contain about 18 inches of soil.The Promenade plantée (French for tree-lined walkway) or the Coulée verte (French for green course) is a 4.7 km (2.9 mi) elevated linear park built on top of obsolete railway infrastructure in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, France. The inspiration for the High Line was the Coulée Verte René-Dumon in Paris.Hector’s used to open at 2 am for employees clocking in for their shifts. During that time, the Meatpacking district produced about a third of the country’s meat. That same diner, Hector’s Diner, has been around since the 1930’s.

The diner under the High Line was featured in Taxi Driver and several episodes of Law & Order.Some of them were laid down again as design features of the park. They removed over 100 tons of steel railroad tracks from the High Line.Specifically they were being hit by the trains that ran down the tracks on 10th Avenue, which was also known as Death Avenue.
